Dr. Anthony Vandal; Superintendent

Dr. Anthony Vandal is in his first year as superintendent and first year leading New Town Public School District #1. Dr. Vandal is originally from Belcourt, North Dakota and is a member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians. He has been in education for 24 years starting as a paraprofessional and making his way to a teacher, a school improvement coordinator, an academic manager (Burdick Job Corps), instructional coach, Director of Education, associate and head principal before accepting the superintendent position here in New Town.

Dr. Vandal holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of North Dakota, a Master’s degree from Concordia University; St. Paul, and a Doctorate degree from the University of Mary, Bismarck. In addition, he holds an Education Specialist degree (post doctorate) from Concordia University; St. Paul with a Minnesota superintendent and k-12 principalship licensure.

Dr. Vandal is excited to be in New Town and anxious to learn about the extraordinary culture of the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara. Being Native American, Dr. Vandal understands the significant role culture plays in our community and will continue this work throughout his tenure.

Lastly, his educational tenure includes a couple firsts. Dr. Vandal was the first Native American (male) scholar to graduate from the University of Mary and the first Native American to hold an administrative position for Grand Forks Public Schools. His drive to break down barriers to provide similar opportunities for his staff and students is what brings him to work each day. He is looking forward to working with staff, students, parents, business leaders, and other stakeholders whose best interest is student success.
